For years, I have forgone wearing a watch just simply because it had felt annoying to have some heavy ‘thing’ to wear around my wrist. However, in the last year, the fashion world has seen a resurgence of watches and I cannot live without it. Like I said in this post, my must have accessory is my watch. It is practical (especially for those times when I’m rushing to catch the train) and it is an essential layering piece.
With the wide array of watches out there, it can become quite overwhelming. However, when you do find the right watch, it can act as an extension of your personality rather than just an accessory. There are four factors in which you need to take into consideration: lifestyle, skin tone, wrist size and personal style. Find the right watch after the jump.
Lifestyle: It is crucial that you consider your lifestyle. If you are quite active or the gym junkie, diamond encrusted gold watches aren’t really the most practical choice (and imagine placing it into your gym bag?). You also need to consider comfort level. If you do want a ‘lighter’ watch, you can opt for a watch with leather straps rather than metal links.
Skin tone: Knowing the undertones of your skin is not just only helpful for picking out the type of metal for your watch but it is also good for makeup and jewelry. To determine the undertones of your skin, just check the colour of your veins on your forearm. Green veins indicate a warm/yellow undertone; Blue veins are cool/pink undertones and a mix of both are neutral. For those who are neutral, you are the lucky ones – you can wear virtually everything. For those with yellow undertones, gold watches tend to look best whereas for those will cooler undertones tend to look best with silver. However, for those who find yellow gold a bit too yellow for their skin (especially for those of fairer skin tones), rose gold is definitely your best friend.
Wrist size: I know some people may not take this into consideration but as a girl with naturally small wrists, it can be difficult to any watch that won’t swallow my arm whole. It is important that the watch face should suit the ‘scale’ of your wrist. In other words, you should still see some of your wrist when wearing your watch.
Personal Style: This is definitely the most important factor that you have to take into consideration. Like I said earlier, your perfect watch can be an extension of your personality. Whether you’re preppy, sports luxe, trendy or classic, there is bound to be a watch for you and your personality. If you love the relaxed Alexander Wang, sports luxe collection – definitely try a digital watch or a silicon strap. Preppy? Try a neutral coloured leather strap. For all those fashion bloggers out there, a nice rose gold watch is a definite must. The most classic choice would be a gold watch which is of good quality.
Hopefully this has helped you find the right watch for you. Tell me down below what your current watch is and if you don’t have a watch, what is your dream watch?
