We hear it time and time again: "Make sure you have the basics in your wardrobe". Yet, there are still many of us (includig myself) that still haven't mastered the quintessential basic wardrobe. It is a collection of the most versatile pieces for every occasion. It is definitely worth the investment for high quality basics that fit well. In the coming weeks, I'll be doing a series of posts which could help you (and most definitely myself) to build a wardrobe of basics that not only consist of quality pieces but also increase the longevity of your wardrobe. Personally, I lean towards a rather neutral palette of white, greys, black, various shades of neutrals and navy. These colours tends to be seasonless and can be easily be paired with anything. This time around, we are focusing on tops and basic outerwear. More after the jump.

One definite must for me is the classic relaxed fit shirt in white, grey and black. These are the most basic of basics. I find that scoop necks are more flattering for me rather than the V-neck since I do have a smaller bust. As a soon-to-be university student, I also find them extremely comfortable and no-fuss. The perfect relaxed tee can be incredibly chic when worn right. Talking about comfort, sweaters are another wardrobe piece I simply cannot live without. It can either be worn on its own or as a layering piece in the colder months. Again, these items would be bought in a rather neutral palette. In terms of outerwear, I do prefer the longline silhouette especially with blazers. I have also been leaning towards coats which are oversized and have a menswear influence. In the fall/winter seasons, the jacket is the most important component and with that very one item can punch up an otherwise ordinary outfit.

These collages are a way of helping me visualise a basic wardrobe in which I hope to master this year. Not only will I stop saying "I have nothing to wear", but also have a wardrobe that will last me for years. Have you already mastered your basic wardrobe or are you still missing pieces like I am?
